The public school year opens between July 23 and September 2. Marion School District goes first; Glastonbury Public Schools starts last, 41 days later. Half of the districts are back in class by August 13.

Connecticut school calendars: 27 districts, first days August 25 – September 2, last days June 8 – June 22.

Nebraska school calendars: 19 districts, first days August 11 – August 19, last days May 14 – May 28.

Missouri school calendars: 15 districts, first days August 24 – August 26, last days May 20 – May 28.

Arkansas school calendars: 14 districts, first days July 23 – August 17, last days May 18 – May 28.

New Mexico school calendars: 12 districts, first days July 24 – August 13, last days May 19 – May 28.

Kansas school calendars: 11 districts, first days August 11 – August 18, last days May 19 – May 27.

Mississippi school calendars: 9 districts, first days July 23 – August 7, last days May 20 – June 4.

School Calendars 2026-2027: Thanksgiving Break

46 public school districts give the whole week of Thanksgiving off (November 23–27), and 61 districts take a shorter break of two or three days around the holiday. If you are booking travel, the full-week districts are the ones that free up the Monday and Tuesday.

Full week off includes Bellevue Public Schools, Jefferson City Public Schools, North Kansas City Schools; a shorter break is the rule at Stamford Public Schools, Bridgeport Public Schools, Fairfield Public Schools. Each public school calendar page lists the exact days.

School Calendars 2026-2027: Winter Break

Winter break in 7 states runs from 7 to 15 weekdays, with 10 the most common length. The longest is at Gulfport School District (December 21, 2026 – January 8, 2027); the shortest is at Stamford Public Schools (December 24, 2026 – January 1, 2027).

Public school districts that come back after New Year’s Day on a Monday give families a clean two-week holiday; those returning mid-week split the second week. Check the exact return date in the school calendars before booking.

School Calendars 2026-2027: Spring Break

102 districts in 7 states schedule a spring break of three or more weekdays. The weeks differ, so families with children in two districts often end up with two separate spring breaks.

5 districts have no full spring break week on the published calendar and instead spread single days off through March and April: Lincoln Public Schools, North Platte Public Schools, Waverly School District 145, Beatrice Public Schools, Crete Public Schools.

School Calendars 2026-2027: Last Day of School

The public school year ends between May 14 and June 22. North Platte Public Schools is first out for summer; Greenwich Public Schools finishes last. Half of the districts are done by May 27.

Snow make-up days are often tacked onto the end of the year, and districts usually settle them only after the last threat of winter weather has passed. A camp deposit for the first week of June is the one most likely to collide with them, so check the last day in these school calendars before you pay it.

School Calendars 2026-2027: Fall and February Breaks

29 public school districts add a fall break of two or more weekdays, mostly in October. 22 districts also take a February break of two or more weekdays, usually around Presidents’ Day.

Planning Around the School Calendars 2026-2027

Summer camps open registration months before the public school year ends. With the last day falling as late as June 22 here, check your district’s date before paying a deposit for the first week of June.

If your children attend two districts, or you share custody across district lines, line up the two calendars side by side. Opening days here are spread over 42 days, and break weeks rarely match exactly.

School Calendars 2026-2027: Days Off and Early Releases

Counting every weekday with no school between the first and last day, public school districts give a median of 27 days off. Española Public Schools has the most (55) and Lincoln Public Schools the fewest (20).

Early release and conference days vary even more: the median is 6, while Raytown Quality Schools lists 40. These are the days working parents feel most, because pickup moves up without a full day off to plan around.
